Frequent questions
Question. Can just talking to a counsellor really change a person's life?
Answer. Yes. Working positively with a qualified counsellor can and does help people make long term changes.
How can counselling help my partner and I to get back to the way our relationship used to be?
Answer. A counsellor can help you to communicate more positively and not get drawn into making comments that harm your relationship. Good communication between a couple can break down for a number of reasons. A counsellor can help you to explore these reasons and then make plans to re-establish the special communication that you used to enjoy.
Question. What is Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
Answer. It is a relatively new psychological technique that works by challenging negative ways of thinking and unhelpful ways of behaving. As well as helping with anxiety and depression it is also successful in combating phobias, obsessions and other problems.
Question. I work long hours and cannot come to counselling during the day - will I still be able to get an appointment.
Answer. Yes I will make every effort to give you a convenient appointment in the evening or weekend if necessary.
Question. Will I have to have counselling sessions for months or years to achieve anything worthwhile?
Answer. No. People are all different of course and so are the difficulties that they want to overcome. There will be variations, but I would expect considerable improvements in around 6 sessions or even less in some cases.
